A space just for us amongst our tutus and friend. We work there, we eat there, we shower, dress and sleep there. Our friends are usually with us and its the place we do what we love most, dance.
Instead of a flurry of anxious activity, a hush hangs over the final pre-show hour like the calm before the storm in our case the snow variety. This is Nutcracker season. And for four weeks and 26 performances, the Benedum Center becomes a home away from home for the dancers of PBT. Here, a handful of PBT dancers share a snapshot of their spots. The business of putting on a show. Because, at the end of the night, when the curtain comes down, there are no laurels to rest on, no masterpiece to hang on the wall. There is only the next show. And this is where it all starts. I like having those items around. I suppose it makes me feel like family is closer, and sometimes holding them centers me.
A dancer's dressing room is often her "home away from home. She usually does her hair and makeup an hour and a half before curtain so that she has time to warm up. Before she goes onstage, she says a little prayer, then checks her ribbons "incessantly" to make sure they're secure. Pre-performance routine: Chung likes to get to the theater two and a half hours early, and does much of her makeup before class for matinees.
